Your Puppy's First Groom: Why Two Intro Trims Come First
A puppy's first trips to the salon should teach them that grooming is safe, and the haircut can wait.

A puppy's first trip to the groomer sets the tone for every visit after it. That's why our menu has a service built just for young dogs, the Puppy Intro Trim, and why we recommend at least two of them before a full haircut. Here's what's in it, why we suggest the two visit approach, and how to get your puppy ready.
What a Puppy Intro Trim includes
The Puppy Intro Trim is for puppies from 3 to 7 months old. It covers a bath, a blow out and brush out, trimming around the eyes and face, trimming the feet and pads, tidying the sanitary areas, a nail trim, ear cleaning, and teeth brushing.
What it isn't is a full body haircut. Our booking page says so in capital letters, and we mean it. The point of this first visit isn't a finished style. It's getting your puppy comfortable with the water, the dryer, the table, the sound of trimmers near the face, and the feeling of being handled all over by people who aren't family.
Each piece of the trim has a reason. Hair near the eyes can get in the way, hair between the pads collects debris, and the sanitary areas stay cleaner when they're kept tidy. Ear cleaning and teeth brushing are in there on purpose too. A puppy who gets used to having their mouth and ears touched now will find later visits much easier.
Why we recommend at least two
Our guidance is to book at least two puppy trims before moving on to a full haircut. The reasons make sense to anyone who has watched a young dog meet something new.
The first visit is mostly an introduction. Everything is new: the smells, the noise, the table, the strangers. Some puppies take it in stride and some freeze, wiggle, or try to play with the dryer. By the second visit the room is familiar, and a puppy who knows what's coming usually settles faster.
A full haircut asks a lot more of a dog than a trim does. It means longer standing still, clippers and scissors over the whole body, and handling of the legs, belly, and tail. Building up to that in steps is kinder than starting with the hardest version on day one. The two visits also let us learn your puppy: which spots they dislike, how they react to the dryer, and what helps them settle.
A real puppy, a real review
Angelina Delgado brought in her 4 month old puppy, who she described as having "tons of energy." In her Google review she wrote that Krista "still managed to give him a PERFECT full body bath and grooming!" She also noted that the front desk staff were "very kind and even sent me text messages with updates on how he was doing there."
Energy is normal at this age. A wiggly puppy isn't a problem to us, it's a puppy. We'd much rather see an excited dog than a scared one, and the intro trim is designed around that.
Getting your puppy ready
A little prep at home goes a long way:
- Let your puppy sniff a brush, then brush gently for a few seconds at a time, followed by a treat
- Touch paws, ears, and face softly for short stretches so handling feels normal
- Take a short walk before the appointment and give your puppy time to relieve themselves, since there's a poop station outside our door
- Bring a leash, because all pets must be on a leash
Read the guidelines page on our site before you book. Rabies vaccination is required, and you can email the record ahead of time or bring it to drop off. If your puppy's age leaves you unsure about the paperwork, call and ask us.
After the second trim
Once your puppy has had two trims and is comfortable with the routine, we can talk about moving up to a full haircut, or one of the in between options for a coat that doesn't need a full cut. Puppy coats change as they grow, and what suits a 4 month old may not suit the same dog at a year, so the plan can shift as your dog does.
Start early rather than waiting until the coat is tangled. A puppy who learns the routine while the coat is still short and easy to manage has a much better first impression of the whole thing.
