In Between, Contour Trim or Full Haircut: Picking for Doodles

Our booking page lists three styles of grooming that can look similar on paper: The In Between, the Contour Trim, and the Full Haircut. If you have a doodle, a poodle, or any dog whose coat keeps growing, choosing between them can be confusing. Here's how we'd think it through, and who on the team does what.

The In Between: a bath and tidy, not a haircut

The In Between includes a bath, a brush out, nails, ears, teeth, and a trim of the face, feet, pads, and sanitary areas. It is not a full body haircut. That's the main thing to understand about it.

It suits a dog whose body coat is in good shape and doesn't need to come off, but who needs to be clean, brushed, and tidy where it counts. Think of it as maintenance between bigger cuts. It's not the right choice for a coat that's badly matted or overgrown, because a brush out can only do so much, and in that case a haircut is the kinder route.

The Contour Trim: shaping the body

Kayleigh, one of our groomers, lists contour trims and lamb cuts among her specialties. In general grooming terms, a contour trim shapes the coat so it follows your dog's body and keeps a soft, natural look instead of taking everything to one short length. A lamb cut is a similar idea, with a rounded, even body coat.

Salons use these words a little differently, so don't rely on the name alone. If you're picturing a particular look, bring a photo or describe it, and we'll tell you whether a contour trim is the right fit for your dog's coat.

The Full Haircut: the whole dog, start to finish

A Full Haircut is the full body cut. It's the choice for a dog who needs the coat reshaped from nose to tail, whether that means a breed standard pattern or a particular style you've had in mind.

Hannah's bio lists breed standard cuts and Doodles among her specialties, along with skin and coat care and large breeds. Stacey is described on our team page as "all things poodle," and her own dogs are poodles and poodle mixes. If your dog is a poodle or a poodle mix, mention it when you book so we can talk through who's the best fit for your dog's coat.

A doodle example

Lisa Bradley brought in her Goldendoodle, Zoey, and Kayleigh groomed her. Lisa wrote in her Google review that the team "absolutely nailed the perfect teddy bear doodle look while still keeping her looking soft, fluffy, natural, and comfortable."

Notice what she asked for: a look, plus a coat that still felt soft and natural. That's the right way to start the conversation. Describe the finished dog, then let the groomer tell you which service gets there. Doodles vary a lot, too. Some have a straight coat, some are curly, and many fall somewhere between, so two doodles of the same size can need different services.

How to choose

A few questions help narrow it down:

  • Is the coat free of mats? If it isn't, a haircut or a shorter trim is likely the better choice than a light service.
  • Do you want the same length all over, or a shaped look that keeps some length in places?
  • How long ago was the last full cut, and how often can you brush at home?
  • Does your dog handle long sessions well, or would a lighter service be easier on them?

Doodle and poodle coats grow continuously and tangle quickly, so the answer often changes from visit to visit. A dog who had a full haircut last time may be a good candidate for a contour trim next time, and a dog who's been brushed faithfully at home may be able to stay on the lighter services longer.

Photos are the fastest way to explain what you want. Bring one of your dog at a length you loved, or one of a style you'd like to try. The groomer can then tell you honestly how close the coat's current condition will let us get.

The groomer may suggest a different service once they see the coat in person, and we talk that through with you at drop off, before we start. That conversation is built into the visit, so if you booked one thing and your dog needs another, you won't find out at pickup.
